The Twelve (The Book Two of The Passage Trilogy): A Novel is a book with an interesting concept, a well-written story, and likable characters. Justin Cronin is the author of this book. This is an excellent follow-up to The Passage. This is another great read, with an imaginative story about life after the virus. The Twelve is a sequel to The Passage in which humanity is ravaged by vampire-like monsters. He would definitely benefit from rereading The Passage just before starting The Twelve, as there are a lot of details and stories to follow. At the beginning there is a very unique summary written in a Biblical style. The main story begins five years later, with Peter, Alicia, Michael, and other California survivors settling in Texas.

Like The Passage, half of the novel is set in the near future, right after the outbreak of the virus. Some of the characters from the first book reappear, as well as new characters who survived the initial onslaught. While this provides a good read, adding more characters seems somewhat unnecessary, especially since the first book’s major characters seem to be killed off along the way. Cronin does a great job of connecting both parts of the story, past and present. The story revolves around Homeland, a city of survivors in Iowa ruled by the former director of Project Noah. The homeland is a very disturbing mix of concentration camps and totalitarian dictatorships, and it’s too unbelievable. Overall, the exceptional writing style of this novel is really great.
