The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson is very well written and a pleasure to read. Robert A. Caro is the author of this book. This book provides a complete picture including behind-the-scenes action of historical events. “The Corridors of Power” provides a great perspective on the 1960 presidential campaign, Johnson’s troubled times as Vice President, the Kennedy assassination, and Johnson’s stunning presidency that followed. Along the way, readers also get a great look at the Kennedy family, especially John and Bobby. The contempt the “Camelot crowd” had for Johnson is well described.

The absolute mutual hatred between Bobby and Lyndon is really great and Caro covers it all in great detail. Caro’s story is a little repetitive at times, but this is probably necessary to get the point across and to remind the reader of what Caro said in the previous volume many years ago. Austin’s TV station is mentioned to some extent, but the mechanics of how Johnson became wealthy aren’t covered in much detail. Finally, with the exception of Bobby Kennedy’s discussion near the end, Caro nearly dismisses the assassination conspiracy theory on the grounds of “trust me on this one” without any serious discussion. Overall, this is a great series and a great book.
