The Keeper of Stories by Sally Page Book Summary

A fascinating, uplifting debut novel—full of comedy and depth—that has grabbed readers around the world by surprise. Everyone has a story to tell. Do you think Janice has the key to her own freedom?

She can’t recollect what started her collection. Perhaps she overheard a snippet of discussion when she was doing the dishes. Soon, she saw that people were opening up to her (when she vacuumed the living room or defrosted the refrigerator) and sharing their life experiences. Perhaps they had always done so, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she collects them to her …

Janice the housekeeper understands that hearing someone’s life story is the best way to truly get to know them. Janice knows everyone in her neighborhood, from the newly widowed Fiona and her son Adam to the opera-singing Geordie, the quiet bus driver Euan, and the pretentious Mrs. “YeahYeah” and her fox terrier, Decius.

Janice finds an audience when she begins cleaning for Mrs. B, a sharp and prickly woman in her nineties. Janice, however, makes it quite plain that while being the story’s custodian, she herself does not possess any tales worth sharing. That’s not a secret she can disclose, anyway.

Mrs. B is not a fool, and she recognizes that Janice conceals secrets. Where is her secret? Indeed, doesn’t each person have their own tale to tell?
