Description of “Stormy Weather” by Paulette Jiles PDF
Stormy Weather: A Novel (PS) is a beautifully written book set in Texas that covers the period from the 1920s to the beginning of World War II. Paulette Giles is the author of this book. The era of the Great Depression is very fascinating and shows the best of American perseverance and character. Paulette Giles has a wonderful way with words. She brings Depression-era North Texas to life in a way that those who lived through that era can easily relate to. This is an atmospheric story of a family’s survival among the oil fields, wild farmlands, and racetracks of Depression-era Texas. The story is about Jack Stoddard, a rambling gambler, his wife Elizabeth, and their three daughters, especially the stubborn middle girl, Jeanine. The Stoddard family has spent years as impoverished travelers, traveling from oilfield to oilfield where Jack works, but in a dramatic twist they return to the farm and Janine returns to their weather-beaten home, which is in disrepair. He will lead a determined effort to restore the land and their land. Lives hurt in the same way.
Along the way, a horrific farm accident, a romance between the daughters, the rude and condescending service of a public health nurse, neighborhood gossip, a risky investment in an oil field that is clearly being developed, and a man named Smokey Joe. A brave horse appears. The harsh weather conditions of the Texas Dust Bowl dominate this entertaining, incident-filled story. The author, Paulette Giles, is a poet, and her descriptions of drought conditions, sandstorms, and deadly static electricity make her want to drink cold water to protect herself from the elements.
