The story is about Jack Stoddard, a rambling gambler, his wife Elizabeth, and their three daughters, especially the stubborn middle girl, Jeanine. The Stoddard family has spent years as impoverished travelers, traveling from oilfield to oilfield where Jack works, but in a dramatic twist they return to the farm and Janine returns to their weather-beaten home, which is in disrepair. He will lead a determined effort to restore the land and their land. Lives hurt in the same way.
