Run by Ann Patchett Description PDF
No matter how it’s constructed, “Run” is an interesting story about family dynamics and the definition of family. Ann Patchett is the author of this book. This is another great Anne Patchett novel. The characters are very well developed and very believable. Ann Patchett has an amazing ability to write about family relationships and the end of her books always surprises me. A very well told story, perfect details. “Run” is a beautifully crafted novel that depicts the life of a family in Boston’s history. Former Boston Mayor Bernard Doyle and his wife Bernadette have adopted two African American boys, Teddy and Tip, in addition to their existing family. When Bernadette dies, Bernard and the boys struggle to maintain their fragile composure. His more serious son Tip heads off to study marine biology, while his charming younger brother Teddy tries to find his way in the world. Bernard encourages the boys to take an interest in politics, but neither Teddy, Tip nor his older brother Sullivan want anything to do with Bernard’s previous work. The thin thread that ties these men together comes undone on a snowy night in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a lecture at Harvard University, Tip and Bernard have a heated argument about Tip’s future. Tip walked backwards into the street and into the path of oncoming traffic. A stranger in the crowd tackles Tip, who escapes the collision but takes the brunt of the car’s impact.
This seemingly small act of the Good Samaritan sets off a chain reaction in the lives of the Doyle family, changing the course of their futures and informing their understanding of their past. Ann Patchett’s sense of language and nuance of character are nothing short of admirable as she unravels the origins of Teddy and Tip. It turns out that the woman who saved Tip was not a stranger, but her biological mother, Tennessee. She has been watching over them since the day she adopted them. Patchett’s incredibly moving account of Tennessee’s past and her motivations for letting her sons go is one of her highlights of this emotionally sophisticated story. And all the seemingly random threads of this complex story as we learn the truth about Tennessee’s 10-year-old daughter Kenya, an excellent runner, told in a very clever scene where Tennessee lies seriously injured in the hospital. But it finally falls into place. Beautifully written, emotionally mature, and deeply satisfying, Ann Patchett is a master storyteller at the peak of her craft.
