Path Lit by Lightning by David Maraniss PDF Summary

This captivating new biography (Path Lit by Lightning PDF) of America’s finest all-around athlete was written by the author of the classic biography When Pride Still Mattered, and it is sure to have readers on the edge of their seats.

Jim Thorpe achieved legendary status as a multi-talented athlete who dominated the competition in every field of endeavor. He was an All-American football player at the Carlisle Indian School, the star of the first class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he played major league baseball for John McGraw’s New York Giants. He won gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He was also an All-American baseball player at the Carlisle Indian School. Even during a time when there were many famous athletes in the world, he was in a class all by himself.

Thorpe’s life, on the other hand, was a fight against the odds despite the enormous skills he possessed. In his capacity as a citizen of the Sac and Fox Nation, he came into contact with dishonest authorities who refused to assist him when doing so would have put their good names in jeopardy.

During his time at Carlisle, he was exposed to the racist and assimilationist concept known as “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” Because he had previously competed at a lower level of baseball, his gold medals were wrongfully taken away from him. In his later years, alcoholism failed marriages, and financial struggles were the primary sources of his misery.

He moved around from state to state and even tried his hand at acting in Hollywood, but not even a biopic based on his own life was able to turn his fortunes around. However, despite all of his difficulties, Thorpe did not give in. The myth continued to exist even while the man did not, regardless of the complications.

David Maraniss goes into great depth on the tremendous challenges that a Native American hero overcame in his newest book, which is titled Path Lit by Lightning. He believes that Jim Thorpe’s tale, when viewed in its entirety, is not one of prejudice, nor does it involve the hypocrisy of others. highlights the fact that despite the obstacles that life presented him, Thorpe continued to train, work, and learn, ultimately achieving his goals.
