It continues the story from where the first book left off. After the automobile accident, Adeline is abducted and taken to a house to be “groomed.” While she is there, she suffers a terrible ordeal. A situation known as a “Culling” has presented itself to her. The men with crossbows are pursuing the girls through the forest, and the girls must avoid being shot. Adeline just escapes death, but not before she has to put an end to the life of one of the girls who was tragically killed by an arrow.
Two months later, right before she’s sold off, Adeline makes arrangements to escape, and Rio, who’s been kind of watching out for her, eventually lends a hand by removing the tracking device from her neck. And vanishes. Adeline flees the house and takes refuge on a derelict railway buried in the woods. At roughly the same time, Zade finds the place she may be kept in, sends men there, and, while exploring the grounds, comes into the derelict train and discovers Adeline inside.
Thanks to the heroic efforts of her friends, Adeline has been safely returned to Parsons Manor. Antifa spends the story learning to cope with the trauma she endured, while Addis works to become more resilient in the hopes that she will one day be able to avoid putting herself in a similar position; but, if Zade has his way, that will never happen.
Eventually, Adeline grows stronger with the help of Zade and Sibby, and the three of them begin to hunt down the persons responsible for her abduction. If there’s one thing Adeline wants, it’s for Zade to put down the sword and spare Rio’s life. And much to his dismay, he agrees with her. Adhering to their word, they also freed Rio’s sister Katerina after rescuing Adeline. Zade’s unconventional proposal provides a pleasant resolution to the story.
