Since she can’t get in touch with her boyfriend, Cole, to get a ride back to their apartment after her shift ends early, she decides to go to the midnight matinee a block away and wait for him to pick her up at 2 in the morning. Jordan’s boss, Shel, didn’t give her the night off for her birthday but instead gave her a box of donuts and a bottle of wine to enjoy before she goes for the night. Shel treats Jordan like her deadbeat daughter, and the gift is a clue that Jordan will be stuck working at the dive bar until the day she dies. Jordan expresses her gratitude to Shel before leaving Grounders and entering her dream (“It’s a nice getaway, especially tonight.”).

A 1980s film is playing at the local cinema, symbolic of Jordan’s want to return to a more carefree era. Jordan goes to the theatre in an attempt to “sort out” her existence. When Jordan’s abusive ex-boyfriend Jay follows her inside the theatre, it’s a symbol that her past relationships will follow her wherever she goes. For Jordan, her mobile phone is a boat floating down the Tunnel of Love; it floats on a river of Merlot until it reaches the shore of mystery man Pike, marking the beginning of her inner battle to overcome feelings of poor self-worth and desertion. The only way Jordan can stop being abused by men like Pike and her current lover Cole is to learn to stand up for herself.
