Bel Canto Explained by Ann Patchett PDF

Bel Canto (Harper Perennial Modern Classics) is a wonderful story full of magical realism that focuses on an attempted kidnapping in a third world country. Ann Patchett is the author of this book. The title of this novel, “Bel Canto,” means “a beautiful singing voice,” and this book is truly about singing. This is a lovely story full of magical realism that focuses on an attempted kidnapping in a third world country. The kidnappers were amateur guerrillas who had hoped to capture the President as a prisoner, only to realize that the President was not in the party that had come out of the vent and crashed. The party celebrated the birthday of a prominent Japanese businessman named Katsumi Hosokawa, and was attended by the nominal vice president and an internationally known soprano named Roxanne Coss. Will what begins as a horrifying prisoner-on-prisoner situation transform into something entirely different? Roxanne has an angelic voice that draws the hearts and souls of men and women to her. She is loved by many. “Before she opened her mouth to sing, even those who saw her for the first time noticed that she was glowing.” , she was brought to what she called “this dreary jungle.”

Mr. Hosokawa has loved opera since he was young and admired Roxanne. Her songs stir up emotions within him that he wasn’t even aware of. A new world opens up to him. The guerrillas free all the women except Roxanne, but the men remain prisoners. The prisoners were a group of amateurs, mostly young men, all carrying rifles. The true beauty of this novel is revealed when captives and captors begin to interact in a hostage situation. People become friends with each other, others fall in love, everyday life begins, music fills the atmosphere. Although the name of the country where this situation occurred is not mentioned in the film, it is reminiscent of the Japanese embassy hostage crisis that occurred in Lima, Peru in 1996.
