American Midnight by Adam Hochschild PDF Summary

The US was in a state of turmoil. Churches serving Black communities were burned by mobs. Thousands were imprisoned for expressing their opinions, even in private. Vigilantes carried out citizens arrests, resulting in tens of thousands of executions. Over 75 publications were banned and shut down by the government, which sometimes incited unrest.

This was the state of America during and after WWI – a disturbing period marked by lynchings, censorship, and the cruel treatment of conscientious objectors in military jails. The toxic mix of racism, nativism, fear of communism, and disregard for the law still affects us today.

A diverse group of characters, from President Woodrow Wilson to activists Kate Richards O’Hare and Emma Goldman, labor leader Eugene Debs, young bureaucrat J. Edgar Hoover, and a leftwing agitator who was actually Hoover’s secret informant, all played a role in this tumultuous time.

In “American Midnight,” historian Adam Hochschild brings to life the inspiring and shocking events of the 4 years after US entry into WWI. He sheds light on the repression and celebrates the Americans who worked to heal their divided country, showing how their struggles still impact us.

From the US entry into WWI to the start of the 20s, America was divided on issues of freedom, pluralism, and equal rights. Political violence, racist mobs, and book banning were rampant. Hochschild expertly portrays this period of upheaval, fear, and potential transformation, much like our current times.

The aftermath of WWI saw Europe devastated, with ruined economies and a generation of men lost. This instability frightened American capitalism and its supporters. Hochschild reveals how the Wilson government turned authoritarian, criminalizing dissent and crippling Reconstruction. American democracy nearly perished in the war at home.
